DyeStat preseason picks to qualify for NXN: Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Northport
Current Prediction: Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Fayetteville-Manlius
Notes: Burnt Hills-Ballston has stayed at the top of the rankings for the entire year and enters this weekend's New York NXR race as the favorite. However, at the beginning of the year Burnt Hillls was the clear favorite and the gap between the top teams has closed. There are several teams capable of winning the title. Corning is one of the teams in contention after winning the New York State Class A championship. Fully healthy with the return of Quinn Nicholson, Corning topped state rival Fayetteville-Manlius by two points at the state meet. Corning had a more decisive victory in the state meet last year and was not able to duplicate that victory and secure an NXN berth, taking third at Bowdoin Park. It's hard to pick against F-M this time of year given the Hornets' history of success. If Fayetteville-Manlius secures another NXN bid, it will keep alive the longest streak in the country that currently stands at nine years. The preseason darkhorse, Northport, has turned into a late season longshot. Northport, along with Niskayuna, Fairport and Smithtown all could nab a top-two spot with a really good day. New York is one of the bubble regions when it comes to an at-large bid, with only Burnt Hills, F-M and maybe Corning with strong enough resumes to warrant consideration.

DyeStat preseason picks to qualify for NXN: Fayetteville-Manlius Saratoga Springs
Current Prediction: Fayetteville-Manlius Saratoga Springs
Notes: New York owns NXN. The Empire State has won 12 of 13 team titles. The top New York team has never finished worse than second. Most of that time it has been Fayetteville-Manlius that has owned the event, winning a remarkable 10 of the past 11 NXN championships. The year Fayetteville-Manlius did not win in the streak of 11 straight NXN appearances (2013), the Hornets still finished second. Fayetteville-Manlius is again a favorite to not only qualify, but win by a large margin. If it's not F-M's best team, it's certainly in the conversation. Saratoga Springs won the first NTN title in 2004. That has been followed with four runner-up finishes and one third-place finish in the 12 years since. After a shaky start, Saratoga Springs appears to be a favorite to qualify for NXN for a 12th time, led by junior Kelsey Chmiel. Shenendehowa has run well this season and could challenge Saratoga Springs for the second automatic spot. Another team to watch is Liverpool, which has not raced since the Section 3 Championships several weeks ago. More news |
