Notes: Corning Painted-Post came into the season as the presumed favorite after scoring 30 points at the 2021 state championships and bringing five of the top seven back. This year's team may not be as strong as last year's, but the Hawks are close enough and this year there is a chance to make it to a national meet. 

CPP, running as Corning Track Club, repeated as NYSPHSAA Class A champions with 60 points and split 53 seconds on five scorers, led by senior Ashton Bange. For Bange, Gabe Cornfield, Tevin McLaren, DJ Cornfield and Marcus Homa, part of the motivation has to be securing an opportunity that was lost to last year's seniors. 

Monroe-Woodbury (MWXC), led by the Feds meet champion Collin Gilstrap, was second to Corning at the state meet and won the team title at New York's "second state meet," the Feds, which was held at Bowdoin Park. Corning skipped that one, but CHSAA champion St. Anthony's of Long Island was there. Monroe-Woodbury beat St. Anthony's 109-120. That's a slim margin and beating the Friars on back to back weekends won't be easy. 

St. Anthony's finished 20 points behind Corning, and third overall (behind CBA NJ) at the Eastern States race at the Manhattan Invitational. The group, led by Aidan Brancaccio, split 17 seconds on its scoring five at Feds last week but doesn't have any front-runners. Brancaccio was 30th in the race. 

Fayetteville-Manlius, which has been a fixture in Portland since the outset of the national meet, didn't have depth this season to advance out of the Section 3 finals and didn't compete at state as a full team. Individuals Nolan McGinn and Anthony Otis, however, are both legit contenders to make it into the top five individually. 

State Class A champion Solomon Holden-Betts from Baldwinsville has run neck-and-neck with the F-M duo, especially McGinn, and he should be at the front of the pack on Saturday. Peter McMahon of West Genesee, Ethan Green from Arlington (Admiral Racing) and Joseph Perazzo of Susan Wagner (Island Express) are all among the individual contenders.

Notes: The biggest storyline entering the meet is not focused on whether Saratoga Springs can once again sweep the top five spots and produce a perfect score like the Blue Streaks did last year, but instead it is the absence of a full Fayetteville-Manlius lineup, which means the Hornets’ streak of 14 consecutive appearances in Oregon will meet an unceremonious end.

Saratoga Springs has dominated the Class A state championship and New York Federation meets in its past two competitions in preparation for the regional event.

The Blue Streaks prevailed by a 23-79 margin Nov. 12 against Fayetteville-Manlius to secure the state championship, then produced a 20-117 victory Nov. 19 against Bethlehem Central at the Federation meet.

Saratoga Springs had five scorers running 18:09 to 18:40 at last year’s regional event, with a sixth competitor also producing a sub-19 performance.

The Blue Streaks had Emily Bush (18:21.6), Sheridan Wheeler (18:24.9), McKinley Wheeler (18:38.3), Anya Belisle (18:45.6) and Alycia Hart (18:51.1) finish third through seventh at the Federation meet at the Bowdoin Park course, showcasing a glimpse of what their potential could be competing as Kinetic RC in the final dress rehearsal before the national final Dec. 3 in Oregon.

With Fayetteville-Manlius coach Bill Aris deciding not to have his entire team compete again after the state meet, in addition to Cicero-North Syracuse not participating in the regional event, Bethlehem Central, competing as Elm Ave A.C., is a strong contender to earn its first trip to Oregon since qualifying for the inaugural Nike Team Nationals in 2004.

Rylee Davis, Anna Chrapowitzky, Katherine Bannigan and Annie Bolke all return from the Bethlehem Central lineup that placed second behind Saratoga Springs at last year’s NXR New York meet, which was the final event of the season for the team with the cancellation of Nike Cross Nationals.

Northport, the third-place team at the Class A championship competing as Cow Harbor, along with Class B state champion Sayville, participating as the Golden Flashes, both looking to challenge for the second automatic berth.

Lillie Bogdan of Frontier Central, Erin Boler of Albany Academy for Boys and Girls, Sarah Lawson of Corning-Painted Post, Gabby Putman and Kate Putman of Cicero-North Syracuse, Izzie Sullivan of Fayetteville-Manlius, Brynn Bernard of South Lewis, Rachel Miller of Monohassen, Noel Barlette of Orchard Park and Rylee Ferretti of the Ocean Breeze Wave Runners are all strong contenders for the five individual berths to qualify for NXN.
